ABOUT THE PAINTING
I was inspired to make this painting when I learned that Hans Christian Anderson’s beloved fairy tale was based on his own tragic gay love story. The day he received a letter informing him that his love was marrying a woman was the day he began writing about the mermaid who became infatuated with someone she could never have. I wanted to recreate the moment when his personal heartbreak and memories grew a shimmery tail and began morphing into art.
